HOBY 2010: May 14-16 at Central Michigan University

HOBY 2010 is approaching quickly!

HOBY is approaching quickly and we (the directing staff) hope you're gearing up for an OUTSTANDING weekend!

A few administrative things first:

  1. You must make sure your registration fee has been paid. Check with the person who registered you if you are unsure whether this has been done.
  2. During the first week of April you will receive student information packets via email to complete the registration process. The email will have some online forms to fill out with your parents and dates, times, and locations for the HOBY weekend. It will also tell you what you'll need to bring to HOBY. It's very important that you receive the email: if this email address is not your preferred email or if you don't check it regularly, please ask your high school counselor to update your email address on HOBY Online.

Now on with the show...

You are receiving this newsletter because you have been signed up for HOBY.

You will receive an email with Seminar details and forms during the first week of April. Check this email regularly.

Your registration fee must be paid for you to attend.
Check with the person who nominated you to ensure your registration fee has been paid for you.

Update your email address with your counselor if this is not your preferred email address.

Get plugged in!

If you were recently registered, check out the previous edition of the HOBY Monthly newsletter.

The Michigan HOBY website (www.mihoby.org) is always updated. Check the "For Students & Parents" section first if you have questions.

Start practicing your amazing talents. You'll have a chance to sign up for our HOBY Talent Show when you complete your online forms (mentioned above). We've seen break dancing, piano concertos, and even how to eat an Oreo from your forehead. If you have a talent, no matter how weird, we want to see it!

In the know...

Here's a few phrases you'll be hearing while at HOBY, and it's good to know what we mean.

Home group: Your newest 8-12 best friends. Really. You'll spend most of the weekend with this group of students from across the state. Home groups all have a GL and one or two ETs. (See the previous newsletter if you don't remember what GLs and ETs are.)

L4S = Leadership for Service: Leadership for Service is HOBY’s service-leadership program intended to prepare young people to contribute to their communities through service-learning and volunteerism.

Why do you volunteer with HOBY?
I volunteer because I love helping people. I am a very caring person and feel accomplished after I complete a service project and see the enjoyment other people receive from my efforts. HOBY has given me many opportunities, all of which I am very grateful for. I have received many scholarships and job opportunities because of the program, along with a lot of recognition. Most importantly, though, are the life long friendships I have made. HOBY has become a second family for me, and I know that it will always be a part of my life, as I am a part of yours in this HOBY family!

I come back to HOBY every year because so many of my best friends are at HOBY and they push me to be the best version of myself. I also love to see the Ambassadors grow throughout the seminar and follow their accomplishments after the seminar is over. HOBY has given me a great extended family. It has also given me many learning opportunities through the seminar, as well as networking possibilities.
