My child has not yet been registered for HOBY. How can I make this happen?

Each high school has its own process for nominating and selecting students to attend HOBY. Have your child express to his/her high school counselor his/her interest in attending HOBY. If the counselor is unfamiliar with HOBY, you can direct them to www.hoby.org for information about selecting and registering a student.

My child has been registered, what now?

Congratulations! More detailed information about dates, times, & locations of the Seminar, as well as items to bring, will be given in the Frequently Asked Questions for Registered HOBY Students PDF on the Forms to Download page in early to mid-April. Registered students will be notified by email once this information is available. Make sure to mark the program dates on your calendar and get ready for a memorable experience!

When is HOBY?

HOBY is a three-day (Friday-Sunday) seminar; HOBY 2010 is May 14-16, 2010. HOBY begins with check-in early Friday morning (~8-10am) and ends Sunday afternoon (~4pm). Students must attend the entire Seminar (beginning with check-in Friday morning through the Closing Ceremony Sunday afternoon.)

NOTE: Please look ahead at sporting event and final exams schededules, graduation events, etc., that might conflict with HOBY. If final exams are scheduled for Friday, speak with your teachers and counselor about the possiblity of creating an alternate exam schedule. Schools are often accommodating. If you cannot commit to attending the entire Seminar, please let your high school counselor know so that another student may be selected.

Does my child have to attend the entire event?

Yes, students registered in a HOBY program must be present for the entire event, including overnight. If circumstances arise that prevent your child from attending the entire program he/she is registered for, we would like to give another student the opportunity to attend. Please immediately go to the high school counselor or principal who registered you and inform him/her of your situation.

What if I am registered and then unable to attend?

If circumstances arise that prevent you from attending the entire program, we would like to give another student from your school the opportunity to attend. Please immediately go to the high school counselor or principal who registered you and inform him/her of your situation, and request that an alternate student be sent in your place. Please also contact the Assistant Director of Recruitment for your seminar.

Will there be adequate adult supervision?

Absolutely! HOBY programs have a minimum of one adult (21 years or older) for every 12 students at all times. Students are never left unattended or allowed to walk across campus or the seminar site without supervision.

Will my child be safe?

HOBY has strict rules against hazardous activities and use of drugs, tobacco, etc. Students are closely supervised at all times. Most programs have a nurse or EMT on staff for illnesses and emergencies. Please be sure to sign a medical release so any required treatment at a local facility is not delayed.

What if my child needs to take medication while at HOBY?

You will be asked to provide information about your child’s medication on program materials emailed to you in early to mid-April, as well as provide a doctor’s note with your child. Our Policy for Use of Medication During a HOBY Event will be included with the medication forms and posted separately with the Forms to Download.

What is the dress code?

Students will be provided a HOBY t-shirt to be worn Friday and Saturday, so a few undershirts are recommended. Khaki/dress pants, shorts, or skirts are to be worn with the HOBY shirt. Friday night will include a DJ dance/mixer where students may wear casual clothes that are school-appropriate. On Sunday, students should bring formal clothes ("Sunday dress") in preparation for the Closing Ceremony. Guys traditionally wear a shirt and tie with dress slacks, while girls wear a nice blouse or dress. Denim should be reserved only for the Friday night dance/mixer.

Will students need money for any activities?

No money is required; all scheduled activities have been paid for in full. However, there will be a HOBY gift stand on Sunday after the Closing Ceremony where you may buy HOBY-related items (hoodies, shirts, CD/DVDs, etc.) but everything is purely optional. A few dollars in change may be helpful if students would like to use vending machines to get a drink or snack before bedtime.
